VACATION IN ZANZIBAR

Zanzibar is a very beautiful island off the Tanzanian coast in East Africa, rich in history, culture, people, spices and is where Assalam has called home for five years.

With MamAfrica, we not only bring this richness and beauty to your feet, we will explore it together sharing with you our fruitful and impactful five years on this island. Let’s give you a sneak peak of it;

1. TIME AT ASSALAM CAMPUS

Our campus is located in the village of Mkunguni in Kizimkazi district in the southeast region of Zanzibar very close to the village where Islam first found its’ way here. By walking or cycling from the resort, you can visit one of the oldest and best preserved villages on the island or be able to visit Kizimkazi Mosque, the oldest mosque in Central and East Africa, dating back to the 12th century. You will meet dozens of children on your way, witness the lifestyle that the people have lived by for ages, and taste the traditional local delicacies in the houses you find abode in. You can spend your free time swimming in the clear waters of the ocean, reading a book, watching a movie or joining our volunteer activities on the campus, getting dirty and developing friendships that will last a life time.

2. STONE TOWN + SPICE GARDEN

The historical streets with more than centuries old buildings, the Old Fortress, the Slave Market Museum and the historical Oman Sultanate Palace are among the many wanders that the capital of this island has to offer. Deriving it name from “Zengibar”, Stone Town is so full of life right from Foradhani Food Market to the streets where local Zanzibari are going about selling their handmade crafts and local cosines. There is so much to this town to discover than we can imagine. The island is so famous for its’ spices, we will get to explore the spices gardens, having one on one conversations with the local growers and will be able to taste their fresh aromas.

3. STONE TOWN + PRISON ISLAND

Spice garden might wait a little more! There is prison island, an island that never became of its’ name and intention rather now a rescue home for a century old tortoise. Our guest can take a Stone Town trip and right after venture to the island from the harbor where they get a memorable swim in the clear blue waters

4. BLUE SAFARI

In the temperate clear waters of the Indian Ocean, you will witness the underwater life in the coral reefs with the mask and snorkel available from the boat and you will never want to get out of the water. After experiencing life under the sea, there is a Sandbank trip, a sandy island near the coral reefs. Depending on the tide, you will stay under the ocean and rest on this reappearing island, taste fresh fruits and enjoy the turquoise waters.

5. EAST COAST

The eastern coast of the island of Zanzibar is quite developed in terms of tourism. Paje, famous for its kitesurfing, beach hotels taking advantage of the windy weather, The Rock Restaurant by the ocean, and Mtende, a cave as beautiful as a hidden treasure, will be the stopping points of this trip. You will be blown away with the beach, sand and swimming in east coast.
