In Zanzibar, approximately 40% of children are used as child laborers due to the poverty and
hunger levels in families. Under the working conditions, it becomes impossible for children to get a decent education, causing 41% of adults to be illiterate in the future. As a result, the workers in Zanzibar get into a cycle where they get employed for low payments under hard conditions due to limited education and skills.
At Assalam Community Foundation, we want to support young people who have the potential to help the economic stability of the country in the future by organizing vocational youth camps.
Our youth camp consists of 40 rooms, 8 classrooms, a library as well as a dining hall giving enough space to offer the young people an optimal learning and living atmosphere for a better-qualified education.
With our classes in 8 different vocational areas, the young students will graduate after one year with a certain degree to be employed in the sectors that are considered to bring a major income to the country’s economy.
To ensure the project's sustainability, every product made during the camps will be available for sale. Also, every summer two-week youth camps will be organized for local and international kids including activities for cultural exchange. This income from the international camps will also be invested in the Vocational Training Centre.
Classes in:
This vocational school covers hand-sewing and machine sewing, as well as using patterns, choosing the right materials and tools, and decorating for the production of garment and non-garment products.
The students will acquire a professional qualification in hotel and tourism management with training in front office operations, housekeeping, food production, customer care, and tourism in Zanzibar.
In our carpentry course, we will teach modern carpentry including the construction of blueprints, working with lumber and other related materials, writing codes, and building walls, floors, and ceilings. Also, the students will acquire trading skills to market their carpentry products more effectively. Some examples of crafts are cabinets, furniture, framing, roofs, and many other areas of a home.
In the cooking program, we aim to equip the students with the relevant skills in cooking and serving. They learn all the processes involved in preparing meals including preparation, menu designing, cooking, plating, and serving, using various tools. Through this course, we aim to integrate the passion of cooking into a profession for young people.
Animal Husbandry is the main course we provide in our camps as an integration of animal husbandry and agricultural programs. It includes the areas of agricultural economics, communications, crop and soil sciences, and agricultural mechanics.
Animal husbandry covers the breeding and management of livestock used as food sources, such as chickens, beef cattle, and dairy cows. In this course, the students will also learn specialized tracks in animal care such as veterinary medicine tracks along with acquiring agricultural knowledge. This program is designed to meet the needs of students who decide to pursue a career in agricultural production.
ICT system consists of a variety of working practices on information, human resources, and technology to effectively operate a business. This course offers the acquirement of the theoretical and practical knowledge to establish, manage and appraise ICT-mediated learning. It is concerned with applying a range of computer programs, software, and other applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, power points, and search engines.
Electricians maintain electricity on various technological devices by designing and repairing electrical systems. The students will learn the fundamentals of electricity, wiring construction, air conditioning and heating, and various electrical installations. Also, they will be introduced to plumbers that work to install, repair, test, and maintain plumbing systems.
The purpose of ECE is to provide children with strategies that help them develop the emotional,
social, and cognitive skills needed to become lifelong learners. The Early Childhood Education (ECE) program prepares students to work with young children effectively. These courses include training on child growth and development; health, safety, and nutrition; child, family, and community; and children’s psychology
