What are Zakah and Fitrah?
1. Zakah
Zakah is an obligatory act of worship, requiring Muslims to give 2.5% of their surplus wealth to eligible recipients. It purifies your earnings and redistributes wealth to uplift those in need.
“The alms are only for the poor and the needy, and those employed to collect it, and to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined [toward Islam], and to free the captives, and for those in debt, and for the cause of Allah, and for the traveler – an obligation [imposed] by Allah.” (Qur’an 9:60)
2. Fitrah (Zakat-ul-Fitr)
Fitrah is a specific form of charity given during Ramadan, usually before Eid-ul-Fitr. It ensures that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can celebrate Eid with dignity.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“The fasting of Ramadan remains suspended between Heaven and Earth unless Zakat-ul-Fitr is paid.” (Sunan Abu Dawood)
